Theodore P. Letis was an American historical theologian and controversial writer on the ecclesiastical text, canon, inspiration, and the rise of modern biblical criticism. He drew attention to confessional and institutional shifts from an ecclesiastically received text toward a critical text managed by academic guilds.
Letis is important for historical framing and for recovering neglected sources, but his arguments, personal judgments, and changing ecclesiastical situation must be assessed separately. A biography should neither erase his contribution nor make him the measure of the doctrine.
