Daniel B. Wallace is an American evangelical New Testament scholar known for Greek grammar, textual criticism, and manuscript digitization. He founded the Center for the Study of New Testament Manuscripts in 2002, which photographs and makes Greek New Testament manuscripts available for research. He has also written extensively for students and churches about variants and reliability.
Wallace provides an important case in which a strong doctrine of inerrancy is paired with a reconstructive critical text. The Research Center should examine how he relates inspiration of the autographs, preservation, confidence, and the practical use of modern editions.
Bibliological positions
Scripture is inerrant in the autographs; the wording of those autographs is approached through reasoned eclectic study of surviving manuscripts, with very high confidence in the text as a whole.
Qualifications and disputes
Wallace defends orthodox Christian doctrine and has made manuscript images widely accessible. Method classification must not be presented as a claim that he is doctrinally liberal.
Debate concerns the relationship between inerrant autographs and an unsettled wording, confidence rhetoric, and the weight assigned to internal evidence.
