Johann Albrecht Bengel was a Lutheran Pietist scholar, pastor, commentator, and Greek New Testament editor. His 1734 edition advanced the classification of manuscripts and the use of internal canons, including the preference for the more difficult reading in a qualified form.
Bengel is a genuinely transitional figure. He argued that the multitude of variants did not overthrow Christian doctrine, yet his editorial practice moved beyond documenting the received text toward selecting readings by criticism.
Bibliological positions
Providence preserved Scripture sufficiently for doctrine and faith; variants should be gathered and critically weighed. Bengel’s maxim about the harder reading operated within a broader set of judgments, not as an absolute mechanical rule.
Qualifications and disputes
Later slogans often detach his canons from their qualifications. His millennial theology and Pietism should not be used to predetermine every textual judgment.
Whether Bengel should be placed mainly in received-text scholarship or modern criticism depends on whether confession, printed text, or method is made controlling.
