Edward Miller was an Anglican clergyman, textual scholar, and literary executor who brought important portions of John William Burgon's unfinished research into print.
Setting: Nineteenth-century Anglican and Burgonian Traditional Text scholarship.
Edward Miller was an Anglican clergyman, textual scholar, and literary executor who brought important portions of John William Burgon’s unfinished research into print. He edited The Traditional Text of the Holy Gospels and The Causes of the Corruption of the Traditional Text and wrote a guide to textual criticism.
His biography belongs beside Burgon’s because some positions attributed broadly to ‘Burgon and Miller’ arise from posthumous editorial shaping. The Research Center must distinguish Burgon’s manuscripts, Miller’s arrangement, and Miller’s own conclusions.
Bibliological positions
The broad transmissional, lectionary, patristic, and manuscript evidence supports the Traditional Text; critical canons must be tested rather than assumed.
Qualifications and disputes
Miller’s posthumous editions involve editorial selection and arrangement. Not every sentence can be attributed to Burgon without checking manuscripts and prefaces.
The boundary between Burgon’s material and Miller’s editorial contribution remains important for citation.
