Journal of Confessional Bibliology — Scripture Alone, Preserved by Providence

Samuel Prideaux Tregelles was an English biblical scholar and manuscript collator who produced a critically edited Greek New Testament after extensive travel and direct work with witnesses.

Setting: English evangelical and Plymouth Brethren associations.

Samuel Prideaux Tregelles was an English biblical scholar and manuscript collator who produced a critically edited Greek New Testament after extensive travel and direct work with witnesses. He also wrote on the history of the printed Greek text and defended Scripture as objective revelation.

His biography is an important warning against treating the authority-method axis as a simple orthodox-versus-unbelieving division. Tregelles’s doctrine could be conservative while his editorial court remained reconstructive criticism.

Bibliological positions

The original wording should be recovered chiefly from the oldest accessible evidence, with the Textus Receptus excluded as an editorial authority. Scripture remains divine revelation despite transmissional variation.

Qualifications and disputes

His edition appeared in parts and suffered interruption through illness; edition history matters.

His place relative to Burgon and Scrivener is frequently simplified into personal or party labels.
