Rudolf Kittel was a German Old Testament scholar and the founding editor of Biblia Hebraica. Early editions used the Second Rabbinic Bible as base; the third edition shifted to the Leningrad Codex, a decision that shaped the later Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia and Quinta line.
His record must distinguish base-text transcription from apparatus conjectures. The choice of one medieval codex as diplomatic base does not mean every critical proposal was inserted into the text.

The Hebrew Bible should be presented from an identified manuscript base with critical evidence and proposed corrections supplied for scholarly judgment.
Qualifications and disputes
The first two and third editions have different base texts; later BHS and BHQ are not simply Kittel’s own editions.
