Journal of Confessional Bibliology — Scripture Alone, Preserved by Providence

Peter J.

Setting: American conservative evangelical seminary scholarship.

Peter J. Gurry is an American evangelical scholar of the New Testament text, Greek, canon, and the history of textual scholarship. He has published studies of scribal habits and the CBGM and joined the Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary faculty in 2025. He has also worked to explain technical textual criticism to evangelical audiences.

Gurry’s record should be updated from institutional sources because appointments change. His work is especially useful for presenting CBGM sympathetically before evaluating its presuppositions and decision structure.

Bibliological positions

The earliest attainable or initial text is reconstructed through critical comparison of witnesses and, where relevant, CBGM analysis; evangelical doctrines of inspiration and canon are articulated alongside that method.

Qualifications and disputes

Gurry writes from a conservative evangelical setting and has criticized exaggerated popular claims about variants. The methodological category is not a statement about salvation or character.

Debate concerns how CBGM relates to traditional external evidence, how the initial text relates to autographs, and whether evangelical confidence resolves the authority problem.
