Julius Wellhausen

Setting: German Protestant university scholarship; resigned a theology chair because he did not see his work as preparing ministers in the traditional sense.

Julius Wellhausen was a German biblical scholar and orientalist whose Prolegomena to the History of Israel gave classic form to the documentary hypothesis and a developmental account of Israelite religion. He argued that the priestly law reflected a late stage rather than the Mosaic foundation depicted in the canonical narrative.

Wellhausen’s importance is not that he invented every source distinction, but that he synthesized earlier German criticism into a historical reconstruction that dominated much twentieth-century scholarship.

Bibliological positions

The Pentateuch is a composite product of sources and redaction reflecting stages of Israel’s religious evolution; critical historical reconstruction governs over canonical self-presentation.

Qualifications and disputes

The documentary hypothesis existed before Wellhausen, and current critical scholarship often revises or rejects its classic form while retaining its authority posture.

The relation of Wellhausen’s model to evolutionary history, Protestant anti-Judaism, evidence, and later source theories remains extensively debated.
