John Owen

Setting: English Reformed Congregationalism; principal Savoy-era theologian.

John Owen was the foremost English Reformed Congregational theologian of the seventeenth century. He served as preacher, pastor, parliamentary religious adviser, dean of Christ Church, and vice-chancellor of Oxford, and wrote extensively on God, Christ, the Spirit, atonement, church, worship, sin, and Scripture.

The Divine Original of the Scripture and The Integrity and Purity of the Hebrew and Greek Text answer questions of authority, self-authentication, original languages, providential preservation, variants, and proposed textual correction. They must be read in the 1650s controversy and not through assumptions borrowed from modern eclectic criticism.

Bibliological positions

Scripture’s authority rests on its divine original and self-evidencing character. God has preserved the Hebrew and Greek text in and for the church; copies and variants call for ministerial care but do not leave the church without an identifiable Word.

Qualifications and disputes

Owen knew of variant readings and textual scholarship. His claim is not that every physical copy is error-free or that no comparison is lawful; exact propositions must be derived from his argument.

Modern writers sharply dispute whether Owen’s doctrine can accommodate contemporary eclectic reconstruction. Safeguard 19 forbids reading later premises back into his terms.
