John Lightfoot was an English clergyman, Westminster Assembly member, Hebraist, commentator, and Cambridge college head.
Setting: English Reformed and Westminster Assembly; Presbyterian with later conformity complexities.
John Lightfoot was an English clergyman, Westminster Assembly member, Hebraist, commentator, and Cambridge college head. He brought rabbinic and Jewish antiquarian learning into New Testament exposition and participated deeply in Assembly debates.
His Research Center value lies in showing the linguistic and historical range expected of major seventeenth-century divines. His conclusions must be separated from the mere fact that he cites a Jewish source, and his Assembly statements should be checked against minutes and dated works.
Bibliological positions
Hebrew, Jewish history, chronology, and comparative learning minister to the interpretation of the canonical text received by the church.
Qualifications and disputes
Lightfoot’s rabbinic parallels are not uniformly probative, and later scholarship may correct particular historical claims without overturning his authority posture.
His millennial views, chronology, and use of rabbinic material receive differing assessments.
