Johann Salomo Semler was a German theologian often associated with the rise of historical criticism and a historically differentiated canon. He argued that the books of Scripture and their ecclesiastical uses should be studied in their changing contexts rather than treated as a flat dogmatic collection.
His importance for the Research Center lies less in one Greek edition than in the enlargement of criticism from readings to canon, authorship, and the religious value of books.

Canon and authority are historically differentiated; critical judgment evaluates the origin, purpose, and continuing religious use of biblical books.
Qualifications and disputes
Semler’s voluminous writings developed over time and cannot be reduced to the slogan that he simply rejected the canon.
