Johann Jakob Griesbach was a German New Testament scholar whose editions and critical canons gave durable form to the recension or text-family approach.
Setting: German Protestant university theology.
Johann Jakob Griesbach was a German New Testament scholar whose editions and critical canons gave durable form to the recension or text-family approach. He developed a threefold grouping of Western, Alexandrian, and Constantinopolitan witnesses and printed readings selected through critical judgment.
His record is central because later genealogies both inherited and rejected parts of his scheme. The common maxim that the shorter reading is preferable must be traced in its full, qualified form rather than attributed to him as an unconditional rule.
Bibliological positions
The earliest attainable text is reconstructed by weighing external groups and internal probabilities. The later Constantinopolitan or Byzantine form was generally secondary within his scheme.
Qualifications and disputes
Griesbach’s recensions are not identical to twentieth-century text-types, and his canons contain qualifications often omitted in summaries.
The extent of Semler’s influence and the success of Griesbach’s three-recension model remain historical questions.
