Heinrich Bullinger succeeded Zwingli as chief pastor in Zürich and became one of the most widely connected leaders of the Reformed churches. Through sermons, commentaries, covenant theology, correspondence, and the Second Helvetic Confession, he helped stabilize and internationalize the Swiss Reformation.
His bibliological importance includes a clear confessional account of Scripture, canonical books, preaching, and the subordinate place of ecclesiastical ministers. His Decades carried Reformed teaching deeply into England and elsewhere.
Bibliological positions
The canonical Scriptures are the true Word of God and the sufficient rule of faith; preaching has authority only as it faithfully expounds that Word. Councils and traditions remain corrigible.
Qualifications and disputes
The famous statement that the preaching of the Word of God is the Word of God concerns faithful proclamation under Scripture, not an independent inspiration of ministers.
Bullinger’s covenant theology and his relation to Zwingli and Calvin are interpreted differently across modern schools.
