Journal of Confessional Bibliology — Scripture Alone, Preserved by Providence

Günther Zuntz was a German-born classical scholar and papyrologist who worked in Britain after leaving Nazi Germany.

Setting: German and British classical university scholarship; emigrated from Nazi Germany.

Günther Zuntz was a German-born classical scholar and papyrologist who worked in Britain after leaving Nazi Germany. His Text of the Epistles studied early papyri and proposed a history of the Pauline text that challenged simple Westcott-Hort categories.

Zuntz belongs in the German line because twentieth-century papyrus discoveries forced criticism to revise older text-type narratives without abandoning critical reconstruction itself.

Bibliological positions

Early papyri and detailed philological analysis can recover an early Pauline text and expose later correction and mixture; older global text-types require revision.

Qualifications and disputes

The proposed Alexandrian editorial process and specific groupings have been reassessed with more evidence.

The coherence of the Alexandrian correction process and the continuing value of Zuntz’s model remain debated.
