Franciscus Junius the Elder was a French-born Reformed theologian, linguist, translator, and professor.
Setting: Continental Reformed orthodoxy; active in Heidelberg and Leiden.
Franciscus Junius the Elder was a French-born Reformed theologian, linguist, translator, and professor. He collaborated with Immanuel Tremellius on a major Latin Old Testament translation and later taught at Heidelberg and Leiden. His treatise on true theology became influential in Reformed scholastic method.
For the Research Center, Junius joins doctrine of revelation to original-language competence. His biography should distinguish him from his son, the philologist Franciscus Junius the Younger.
Bibliological positions
Sacred theology arises from God’s revelation and receives its principles from God; linguistic and academic labour serves the understanding and translation of the Hebrew Scriptures.
Qualifications and disputes
Junius’s Latin Old Testament was a translation and scholarly aid, not a replacement for the Hebrew original. Father and son are often confused in catalogues.
The relation of Junius’s theological method to later Reformed scholasticism and natural theology is debated.
