Francis Turretin was a Genevan pastor, professor, and leading representative of high Reformed orthodoxy. His Institutio Theologiae Elencticae arranged theology through disputed questions and answered Roman Catholic, Socinian, Arminian, and other opponents.
The opening topic on Scripture treats necessity, authority, canon, authenticity, preservation, versions, perfection, perspicuity, and interpretation. Because the work is elenctic, every conclusion belongs with its question, opponent, distinctions, and proof.
Bibliological positions
The Hebrew Old Testament and Greek New Testament are authentic in a way translations are not; divine providence has preserved them, while versions possess derivative authority according to fidelity. Scripture, not church or reason, is theology’s external cognitive principle.
