Fenton John Anthony Hort

Setting: Church of England and Cambridge scholarship.

Fenton John Anthony Hort was a Cambridge scholar, Anglican priest, member of the New Testament Revision Company, and Westcott’s principal collaborator on the 1881 Greek text. His Introduction supplied the most influential statement of their genealogical theory, Syrian conflation, and the proposed Neutral and Western categories.

Hort’s letters are valuable but must be dated and read in context. The Research Center should answer his published argument at full strength, especially where later criticism has abandoned his labels while retaining many readings.

Bibliological positions

Genealogy, transcriptional probability, and intrinsic probability identify the earliest recoverable text; the Syrian or Byzantine text is generally a late editorial development, while Vaticanus is a leading Neutral witness.

Qualifications and disputes

Modern critics have revised or rejected major parts of Hort’s text-type theory. That does not by itself establish the traditional text, nor does continuing agreement prove the original theory.

The historical reality of the Neutral Text, Syrian recension, conflation argument, and Hort’s theological influence are central disputes.
