Eberhard Nestle was a German orientalist and biblical scholar whose 1898 Novum Testamentum Graece compared the editions of Tischendorf, Westcott-Hort, and initially Richard Francis Weymouth, later substituting Bernhard Weiss.
Setting: German Protestant scholarship and Württemberg Bible work.
Eberhard Nestle was a German orientalist and biblical scholar whose 1898 Novum Testamentum Graece compared the editions of Tischendorf, Westcott-Hort, and initially Richard Francis Weymouth, later substituting Bernhard Weiss. The compact edition became the ancestor of the Nestle-Aland series.
The early method must not be described as three independent manuscript votes: the source editions shared evidence and influence. Later editions gradually became direct editorial products rather than simple majority comparisons.
Bibliological positions
A practical critical text can be formed by comparing leading scholarly editions, with significant disagreements documented in an apparatus.
Qualifications and disputes
The editorial basis changed across editions and under Erwin Nestle and later committees.
Claims of independent consensus among the source editions require dependency analysis.
