David C. Parker

Setting: British university biblical scholarship.

David C. Parker is a British scholar of New Testament manuscripts, palaeography, and digital editing. At the University of Birmingham he founded the Institute for Textual Scholarship and Electronic Editing and led work on electronic editions, Codex Sinaiticus, Codex Bezae, and the International Greek New Testament Project.

Parker’s language of a living text and his emphasis on the creative work of editing are especially relevant to the Research Center’s authority axis. His primary works should be quoted in context, with a distinction between descriptive claims about transmission and theological conclusions drawn from them.

Bibliological positions

The New Testament survives as a changing manuscript tradition; editions are scholarly constructions that represent evidence and editorial aims rather than a final, uniquely recoverable form.

Qualifications and disputes

Digital transcription and open manuscript access are major scholarly services. Critique of the edition concept should not obscure the value of making witnesses inspectable.

Debate concerns whether living-text language is simply historical description or entails a theology incompatible with a determinate preserved text.
