Journal of Confessional Bibliology — Scripture Alone, Preserved by Providence

Bernhard Weiss was a German Lutheran New Testament scholar, commentator, introduction writer, and editor of a critical Greek text.

Setting: German Lutheran university theology.

Bernhard Weiss was a German Lutheran New Testament scholar, commentator, introduction writer, and editor of a critical Greek text. His editorial work emphasized authorial style and internal evidence and became one of the sources Eberhard Nestle compared in forming the first Nestle text.

His role is often hidden behind the Nestle brand. The Research Center should recover which readings entered the composite text through Weiss and how his exegetical judgments functioned.

Bibliological positions

The text is reconstructed through manuscript evidence joined to close judgments about each author’s language, context, and probable wording.

Qualifications and disputes

Weiss’s critical text, commentaries, and introductions are distinct works; agreement with Nestle does not show independent consensus when Nestle used Weiss as a base.

The relative weight of internal versus external evidence in his actual decisions deserves statistical study.
