Benjamin Breckinridge Warfield was a Presbyterian minister and theologian who taught at Princeton Theological Seminary. He wrote on inspiration, authority, textual criticism, Christology, perfectionism, evolution, and Reformed theology. Early in his career he studied European textual criticism and reviewed the Westcott-Hort text.
Warfield is a crucial mixed historical figure for Confessional Bibliology: he powerfully defended Scripture’s divine origin and infallibility, yet accepted a critical-text framework centered on recovering the autographs.
Bibliological positions
The original autographs were verbally inspired, infallible, and without error; textual criticism is a providential means for restoring their wording from surviving copies, whose variation does not destroy doctrine.
Qualifications and disputes
Warfield did not deny preservation or biblical authority, and his critical method cannot be answered by calling him a liberal. His wording should be compared with Charles Hodge, A. A. Hodge, and older Reformed sources.
Debate concerns whether Warfield preserved or revised the older Reformed doctrine, the origin and force of inerrancy terminology, and the coherence of inspired-autograph doctrine with an unsettled critical text.
