Bart D. Ehrman is an American scholar of New Testament textual criticism and early Christianity. Trained under Bruce Metzger, he wrote a major study of the theological alteration of texts and later became a prominent public author on manuscripts, canon, the historical Jesus, and early Christian diversity. He has described a personal movement from evangelical Christianity to agnosticism.
The biography must distinguish his technical textual scholarship from popular rhetoric and from his personal religious history. Claims about variants should be tested against his monographs and the manuscripts rather than inferred from either apologetic or skeptical summaries.
Bibliological positions
The New Testament text is reconstructed historically from a variant manuscript tradition; scribes sometimes changed readings for theological reasons, and historical inquiry is not governed by confessional claims of inspiration.
Qualifications and disputes
Not every variant is theologically motivated, and Ehrman’s technical works contain more qualification than some popular presentations. His public agnosticism is self-described and should not substitute for analysis.
Debate concerns the frequency and significance of intentional changes, the rhetoric of popular works, and whether historical conclusions warrant broader theological claims.
