Huldrych Zwingli was the leading early reformer of Zürich. Trained in humanism and Greek, he began continuous exposition of Matthew in 1519 and pressed civic and ecclesiastical reform through public disputations grounded in Scripture. His work helped form the Swiss Reformed tradition before his death in battle at Kappel in 1531.
His place in the Research Center lies in the scriptural argument for reform, his use of original-language study, and his role in the Zürich Bible. His sacramental differences from Luther and the political form of the Zürich reformation remain necessary context.
Bibliological positions
Scripture supplies the norm for doctrine and worship; preaching and reform should proceed by exposition of the biblical text rather than inherited custom alone.
Qualifications and disputes
Zwingli’s cooperation with Zürich’s magistrates and his distinct sacramental theology must not be hidden under a generic Reformer label.
His relation to Erasmus, independence from Luther, and the development of his eucharistic teaching remain debated.
