Wilhelm Martin Leberecht de Wette was a German biblical scholar whose work on Deuteronomy, the Pentateuch, Psalms, and critical introduction influenced nineteenth-century accounts of Israel's religious history.
Setting: German Protestant and later Basel university theology.
Wilhelm Martin Leberecht de Wette was a German biblical scholar whose work on Deuteronomy, the Pentateuch, Psalms, and critical introduction influenced nineteenth-century accounts of Israel’s religious history. After losing his Berlin post, he continued his career at Basel.
He belongs in the timeline between Eichhorn and later source-critical syntheses. His individual arguments should not be backfilled with Wellhausen’s later system.
Bibliological positions
Historical and literary evidence may relocate books and laws to settings later than their traditional attributions; theological use is distinguished from historical origin.
Qualifications and disputes
His critical positions developed, and not every later documentary claim is his.
His balance of theological appreciation and historical skepticism is interpreted differently by historians.
