Theodore Beza

Setting: Genevan Reformed; Calvin’s successor at the Academy and in international Reformed leadership.

Theodore Beza was a French classical scholar, Reformed theologian, Genevan pastor, academy leader, and editor of the Greek New Testament. After joining the Reformation, he taught at Lausanne and then Geneva, where he became Calvin’s principal successor. His Greek-Latin New Testament editions and annotations appeared in several forms, with the 1598 edition especially important in the history surrounding the Authorized Version.

Beza’s biography must join confessional theology to exact bibliographical work. His printed text, Latin renderings, annotations, manuscript holdings, and conjectural discussions are not the same object. The presence of a proposal in an annotation does not prove that he placed it in the text.

Bibliological positions

The received Scriptures govern doctrine and church; philological and textual examination serves their exposition. His New Testament work conserved and refined the printed Greek tradition while recording evidence and proposals in annotations.

Qualifications and disputes

Beza sometimes discussed conjectures or preferred readings not printed in his main text. Edition-to-edition variation and the distinction between text, translation, and note are essential.

Debate concerns his influence on the Authorized Version, the use of Codex Bezae and Codex Claromontanus, and the theological role of particular annotations.
