Louis Gaussen

Setting: Swiss Réveil and confessional Reformed resistance to rationalism.

Louis Gaussen was a Genevan Reformed pastor, teacher, and leader in the nineteenth-century Réveil. Conflict with rationalizing ecclesiastical authorities led to his removal and later work in the Evangelical Society and its theological school. His Theopneusty defended the full inspiration of Scripture; his later Canon of the Holy Scriptures treated canonical recognition from the double point of view of faith and historical study.

Gaussen is a bridge from older Reformed orthodoxy into nineteenth-century battles over rationalism, canon, and inspiration. His rhetorical examples must be read with his governing scriptural argument.

Bibliological positions

All Scripture is God-breathed in its words and parts; the canon is received under the authority of Christ and the apostles, while historical evidence confirms rather than creates faith’s object.

Qualifications and disputes

Gaussen’s terminology and illustrative arguments precede later American inerrancy debates. Theopneusty should not be summarized solely through a later slogan.

Readers differ over the relation of his ‘science and faith’ language to presuppositional method and over particular historical claims in the canon work.
