Karl Lachmann was a classical and German philologist whose New Testament editions became symbolic of a deliberate break with the Textus Receptus. His goal was not the autograph in a simple sense but a text associated with the early centuries, reconstructed from selected ancient evidence.
The label ‘Lachmannian method’ has a wider history in classical textual criticism. The Research Center should distinguish Lachmann’s own New Testament procedure from later stemmatic theories attributed to his name.
