John Cosin was an English churchman, liturgical scholar, royalist exile, and later Bishop of Durham.
Setting: Church of England; Caroline Anglican rather than confessional Presbyterian or Baptist Reformed.
John Cosin was an English churchman, liturgical scholar, royalist exile, and later Bishop of Durham. His long Scholastical History of the Canon assembled biblical, Jewish, patristic, conciliar, and later evidence concerning the books received as Scripture.
Cosin belongs in the Research Center because his canon history preserves a large chain of testimony and requires careful verification of citations. His high-church liturgical commitments and Anglican setting should be stated plainly rather than absorbed into a generic Reformed category.
Bibliological positions
The canon is historically witnessed through the church without being manufactured by an ecclesiastical decree. Patristic and conciliar evidence serves the identification and history of reception.
Qualifications and disputes
Cosin’s theological tradition differs materially from Westminster Presbyterianism and the Second London Baptist Confession. His historical citations require checking against primary editions.
His use of deuterocanonical terminology and the exact force of individual patristic witnesses can be read differently.
