Johannes Buxtorf the Younger succeeded his father in Hebrew at Basel, edited and expanded parts of the Buxtorf scholarly legacy, and became a principal defender of the traditional view of Hebrew vowel points. His controversy with Louis Cappel made him a major figure in the seventeenth-century debate over the history and integrity of the Hebrew text.

Bibliological positions
The consonantal and vocalized Hebrew text received in the church bears a providentially preserved integrity; conjectural correction and late-origin claims must not displace that received form.

His historical account of the vowel signs is not identical with the theological claim that the Hebrew text is authentic. Modern evidence must be engaged without rewriting what he argued.
The Buxtorf-Cappel controversy is often summarized through later textbooks; direct comparison of their works is required.
