Johannes Buxtorf the Elder was the leading Basel Hebraist of his generation.
Setting: Swiss Reformed orthodoxy at Basel.
Johannes Buxtorf the Elder was the leading Basel Hebraist of his generation. He taught Hebrew for decades, produced grammars, lexicons, concordance work, and studies of Jewish life, and established a scholarly programme continued by his son. His close contact with Jewish books and teachers gave his work wide reach in Protestant biblical study.
The Research Center should use Buxtorf for the history of Hebrew instruction, Masoretic studies, and the vowel-point controversy, while distinguishing his work from that of Johannes Buxtorf the Younger.
Bibliological positions
The Masoretic Hebrew text is the authentic Old Testament for the church; grammar, lexicography, and Jewish learning serve its reading. He defended the traditional antiquity of the vowel points.
Qualifications and disputes
Modern historical conclusions about the vocalization system differ from Buxtorf’s chronology. His theological function and his historical claim should be assessed separately.
The origin and antiquity of the vowel points and Buxtorf’s use of Jewish sources remain central disputed matters.
