Jan Krans is a Dutch textual critic known for research on the editorial practices of Erasmus, Stephanus, Beza, and the history of the Textus Receptus.
Setting: Dutch academic textual criticism.
Jan Krans is a Dutch textual critic known for research on the editorial practices of Erasmus, Stephanus, Beza, and the history of the Textus Receptus. His work on conjectural emendation and the New Testament Virtual Manuscript Room also contributes to current digital criticism.
The Research Center should use his primary-source discoveries even where it disputes his authority framework. Accurate evidence about a received edition’s printing history is not owned by either side of the theological debate.
Bibliological positions
Printed Greek editions are historical editorial products to be reconstructed and criticized; no Textus Receptus edition possesses presumptive authority over manuscript and internal evidence.
Qualifications and disputes
Historical demonstration that editors used conjecture or limited evidence does not alone decide the confessional question of reception and providence.
The theological weight of editorial history, the scope of conjecture, and the definition of Textus Receptus are disputed.
