Jakob van Bruggen was a Dutch Reformed New Testament scholar, professor at the Theological University in Kampen, commentator, and author on canon, exegesis, and textual questions.
Setting: Dutch confessional Reformed scholarship.
Jakob van Bruggen was a Dutch Reformed New Testament scholar, professor at the Theological University in Kampen, commentator, and author on canon, exegesis, and textual questions. His The Ancient Text of the New Testament questioned the standard rejection of the Byzantine text and pressed scholars to account for the history of the text used by the church.
He belongs between Burgon and modern confessional discussions: not simply a Textus Receptus advocate, but a serious critic of the assumptions by which the traditional text was marginalized.
Bibliological positions
The antiquity and breadth of the Byzantine tradition deserve full weight; absence from early surviving papyri is not proof of late origin, and the church’s transmitted text is historically significant.
Qualifications and disputes
Van Bruggen’s defence of the ancient or church text should not be equated automatically with every reading of a particular TR edition.
His exact preferred text and the degree of compatibility between his historical case and confessional TR positions remain debated.
