Henry Alford was an Anglican clergyman, dean of Canterbury, hymn writer, and author of a widely used Greek Testament commentary. His edition brought nineteenth-century critical decisions into sustained English-language exposition for clergy and students.
Alford matters not chiefly as the inventor of a new system but as a mediator through whom critical reconstruction entered ordinary commentary and preaching study.
Bibliological positions
The Greek text should be critically revised from manuscript evidence, and exegesis should proceed from that revised text rather than the Textus Receptus by default.
Qualifications and disputes
