Emanuel Tov

Setting: Jewish and Israeli academic biblical scholarship.

Emanuel Tov is a Dutch-born Israeli scholar of the Hebrew Bible, Septuagint, and Dead Sea Scrolls. He taught at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and served as editor-in-chief of the international Dead Sea Scrolls publication project. His textbooks and electronic projects systematized the comparative use of Hebrew, Greek, Samaritan, and Judean Desert witnesses.

Tov’s work is central for evaluating textual plurality and the relationship between textual criticism and literary growth. His Jewish scholarly setting and his conclusions about particular books must be described directly rather than forced into Christian confessional categories.

Bibliological positions

Ancient witnesses may preserve different literary editions; in some books the evidence does not support a single simple original text, and textual criticism overlaps with literary criticism.
