Journal of Confessional Bibliology — Scripture Alone, Preserved by Providence

Constantin von Tischendorf was a German scholar, traveller, manuscript editor, and prolific editor of the Greek New Testament.

Setting: German Lutheran university scholarship.

Constantin von Tischendorf was a German scholar, traveller, manuscript editor, and prolific editor of the Greek New Testament. He is inseparable from the modern history of Codex Sinaiticus, portions of which he removed or obtained from St Catherine’s Monastery in stages before publishing the codex.

His biography must keep discovery narrative, ownership controversy, palaeographical judgment, diplomatic publication, and influence on his eighth edition analytically distinct. Romantic retellings of the wastebasket story should be tested against the changing primary accounts.

Bibliological positions

The Greek text is reconstructed by comparison of the earliest and best witnesses, with editorial conclusions revised as new manuscripts become available.

Qualifications and disputes

Tischendorf’s editions differ from one another; ‘Tischendorf’s text’ is not one unchanging object. The Sinaiticus acquisition narrative is contested.

The circumstances of Sinaiticus’s removal, its dating, and the weight Tischendorf assigned it remain subjects of controversy.
