Theopneustia: The Bible, Its Divine Origin and Inspiration
Louis Gaussen · 1859
Louis Gaussen, Theopneustia: The Bible, Its Divine Origin and Inspiration (Cincinnati: George S. Blanchard, 1859).
Overview
Gaussen defends verbal and plenary inspiration against thought-only accounts, then answers objections involving translations, the Septuagint, variants, historical narratives, and criticism. The final chapters are especially important: sacred criticism may inquire, record, and guard, but it may not sit in judgment over the Word of God.
The book is not a full doctrine of canon or transmission, and its nineteenth-century illustrations require independent historical check. Nevertheless, it offers a clear ministerial order: God speaks in the words of Scripture; criticism is a servant; and difficult historical questions do not authorize a critic to make himself the judge of divine revelation.
