Edward Leigh was an English scholar, parliamentarian, and prolific compiler whose works ranged across theology, history, ethics, and the biblical languages.
Setting: English Puritan and Westminster-era Reformed setting.
Edward Leigh was an English scholar, parliamentarian, and prolific compiler whose works ranged across theology, history, ethics, and the biblical languages. His Critica Sacra assembled Hebrew and Greek lexical and interpretive material for ministers and students; his Body of Divinity presented a broad Reformed system.
Leigh is especially valuable for recovering the working reference culture of the Westminster age. Because he compiles many earlier authorities, the source of an individual claim must be traced rather than attributed automatically to Leigh as an original conclusion.
Bibliological positions
The original-language Scriptures govern versions and theology; learned aids, lexicons, and prior commentators are ministerial instruments for reading them.
Qualifications and disputes
Critica Sacra is a compilation and must be cited with attention to attributed sources. Its philology reflects seventeenth-century resources.
The originality and exact influence of Leigh’s compilations are often overstated or neglected.
