Jan Hus

Setting: Late-medieval Bohemian church; pre-Reformation and influenced by Wycliffe, while differing from him on several points.

Jan Hus was a Bohemian priest, preacher at Bethlehem Chapel, university master, and leading voice for reform in Prague. He received significant impulses from Wycliffe while developing his own programme of preaching, moral correction, and ecclesiological argument. Summoned to the Council of Constance under a promise of safe conduct, he was condemned and burned in 1415.

Hus belongs in the Research Center as a witness to appeal beyond a corrupt court to Christ’s Word, and as a vital link between medieval calls for reform and the sixteenth century. His record must distinguish his own writings from later Hussite developments and must not make martyrdom a substitute for exact doctrinal analysis.

Bibliological positions

Scripture supplies the governing truth by which church leaders and councils may be judged. Faithful preaching and obedience to Christ’s law are not made true by institutional office alone.

Qualifications and disputes

Hus was a late-medieval Catholic reformer, not a subscriber to a later Protestant confession. His dependence upon and differences from Wycliffe require work-by-work documentation.

The relation of Hus to Wycliffe, the fairness of specific charges at Constance, and the degree of continuity between Hus and later Hussite parties are contested.
