Michael W.
Setting: American Baptist and evangelical university scholarship.
Michael W. Holmes is an American scholar of New Testament textual criticism and the Apostolic Fathers. He taught at Bethel University, edited a widely used Greek-English Apostolic Fathers, and served as sole editor of the SBL Greek New Testament. He also participated in translation and manuscript-related organizations.
Holmes is important for comparing a single-editor eclectic text with committee editions and for studying how evangelical institutions receive modern critical methods.
Bibliological positions
The critical text is selected through editorial evaluation of readings and comparison with established editions, while manuscript evidence remains the basis for revision.
Qualifications and disputes
Holmes is publicly identified with evangelical Christianity. The method category does not imply that all theological positions follow from his edition.
Discussion concerns the SBLGNT’s dependence on other printed editions, its apparatus design, and the role of a sole editor.
