Caspar René Gregory was an American-born scholar who spent his career in Germany and made enduring contributions to the cataloguing and description of New Testament manuscripts.
Setting: American-born, German university Protestant scholarship.
Caspar René Gregory was an American-born scholar who spent his career in Germany and made enduring contributions to the cataloguing and description of New Testament manuscripts. The Gregory numbering system, later joined with von Dobschütz’s work, became the Gregory-Aland system still used today.
His biography demonstrates that infrastructure is never merely clerical: the way witnesses are identified, dated, and grouped shapes all later textual arguments.
Bibliological positions
Comprehensive manuscript registration and direct examination are prerequisites for critical reconstruction of the New Testament text.
Qualifications and disputes
Cataloguing achievement should be distinguished from particular editorial conclusions; modern catalogue entries have corrected and expanded his data.
Individual dates and identifications require current INTF verification.
